Weekly Review: What Makes a Good Anime?

There are many good anime series. We’ve also seen some bad ones. What makes an anime good? Could you answer this question? A good anime depends on who you are, right? A person who enjoys action anime may praise it above all others, while someone who prefers romance anime might think the action anime to be bad. Well. I love all kinds of anime in different genres. I’m going tell you what I think makes a great anime.

Storyline is the first thing to consider! A good storyline is essential for the success of any anime or story. It’s the same for novels, movies, or whatever else you think of. It’s sad that many anime shows today try to create a loose plot and call it a good one. It takes time and energy to create something like this. Log Horizon, for example, has one of the most compelling storylines I’ve ever seen. The viewer has to stay engaged with the story on a regular basis. It’s beautiful. Fate Stay Night is the story king. The series, though it may appear complicated at first glance, has a very well-established story to which it adheres beautifully. It’s the storyline that will keep viewers engaged, and it is also what keeps us absorbed in the series.

Characters! What is as important as a story? Characters! To survive, the anime series must have characters who are relatable and lovable 9anime. It is important to feel a connection to the main characters so that we can immerse ourselves in this fantasy world. The development of a character is the key to making a great character. There are many ways to do this, and I won’t go into them all. Otherwise, we will only be staring at the screen. We want to see that the characters are growing. The Walking Dead is a perfect example. It’s not an anime but it’s still a great example. Wow! Compare the current Rick Grimes with season 1 Rick. It is an extreme example over several seasons but it still works. We are looking for growth… or crazy, whatever works.

What now? Others might argue that you need to have a good villain. It’s true, you need a good villain. Someone who will challenge the good guy and make him better. Gurren Lagann is my favorite bad guy, mainly because he is not that bad. You know what I’m talking about if you have seen the series. Full Metal Panic is a good example of an evil character, as the hero defeats him repeatedly. It becomes boring. The opposite extreme is to have a different bad guy in every episode, like Ushio or Tora. Some people find it appealing, but others do not. The same thing every time gets boring. A good anime will always be changing things up.

Animation is important. I don’t want to pick on the elephant, but it’s important. Most anime fans would agree that animation is not important. Like gamers who say that the game is more than just the graphics. The animation is a big help, I think. Take Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series is fantastic. After watching the stunning animations of the rebuilt buildings, it is hard to turn back. It helps to indulge the viewer when it looks good.

That’s all I have to say about my little rant. I’ve seen so many animes do the wrong things that you wonder how they got this far. But someone has to watch them. Next week, we’ll be covering a very intriguing anime… Soul Eater.
